According to newly-released data from LinkedIn, Chicago and other top metro cities in the U.S. are losing much of their top talent to smaller cities with lower cost of living and better opportunities to make a good living. Nashville, Charlotte and Las Vegas increased their number of new workers in September, jumping past list mainstay Seattle.
Experts say this is happening because of the housing supply in traditionally popular U.S. towns like Seattle,Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York City. As it continues to get harder and harder to find affordable housing in these cities, workers are packing their bags and heading to cities with a better housing market. As rents skyrocket, workers are finding it harder to make ends meet, and are being forced to take a hard look at their expenses and figure out what to change. More often than not, housing is the most expensive thing people deal with on a monthly basis. Because of this, it makes sense that when people are having difficulty with their finances, they look at their living situation first. One way people get around an expensive new city is by signing a lease on a short-term apartment before they decide where they want to settle.
Chicago is also one of the U.S. cities with the greatest surpluses across all skills. A surplus in skill is when, in a particular city, the amount of workers with a certain skill exceeds local employer demand for this skill. LinkedIn uses customer-inputted data to come up with these numbers, and it can be very eye-opening for employers and job-seekers alike.
However, this doesn’t mean that all skills are in surplus in Chicago right now. In fact, there are a number of industries where the demand for a certain skill surpasses the amount of workers with that skill. People skilled in the following categories will have a better shot at finding a job in Chicago right now due to the fact that there aren’t as many people with that skill set.
